The Story of Halfman

In the sunlit towns of North Africa, there once lived a noble judge who longed for a child to carry his name. One day, a mysterious old man gifted him twelve golden apples, promising that if his wife ate them, she would bear twelve sons. She did—but before finishing the last apple, she shared half with her sister, and so the twelfth child was born only half-formed, with one arm, one leg, and half a face. Yet this Halfman grew strong in spirit and cunning of mind, surpassing all his brothers. When the twelve sons set out to wed their cousins, they fell into the trap of a man-eating ogre. Only Halfman’s wit saved them, but jealousy turned his brothers’ hearts dark, and they left him to die. Rescued by a magical fish, Halfman faced ogres, tricked monsters, and fought for his stolen bride, outwitting every danger that sought his life. In time, he returned home, revealed the truth, and forgave those who betrayed him. Yet even victory bore a heavy price, for the debts of old promises still bound his heart. And so, people say, the tale of Halfman endures—a story of courage born not from wholeness, but from the strength of the soul.
