The Swan Maidens and the Silver Knight: French Folktale

In the old lands of Brabant, where the River Scheldt shimmered beneath castle walls, a gentle princess named Elsje lived in sorrowful captivity. Her parents were gone, and a cruel count held her prisoner, seeking to claim her kingdom for his own. Her only companions were seven graceful swans who glided each day upon the still lake beneath her window. Unbeknownst to her, these swans were once princesses themselves, daughters of a good king in neighboring Gelderland, turned to birds by their jealous stepmother’s curse. Moved by Elsje’s kindness, the swan maidens sought to help her. Guided by a fairy’s magic, they brought her a message—if she could sew seven feathered coats in silence for seven months, their enchantment would be broken. As she began her quiet work, a noble warrior known as the Silver Knight arrived, vowing to free her. He defeated the wicked count and married Elsje, never knowing the vow that bound her voice. In time, she finished her sacred task and restored the swan maidens to human form, but when she spoke before her vow had ended, her knight vanished into the forest. And so, by courage, silence, and sorrow, her heart learned the tender cost of devotion.
