The Story of Tinirau and Kae: The Sacred Dolphin

November 6, 2025

In the ancient days of Aotearoa, when the ocean still whispered the words of the gods, there lived a great chief named Tinirau, guardian of the sacred dolphins who carried messages between sea and sky. Among them was Tutunui, a dolphin of shining grace and wisdom, bound to Tinirau by deep friendship. One day, a priest named Kae came to Tinirau’s home to perform sacred rites, and when his work was done, Tinirau offered him Tutunui to carry him safely across the waters—warning him never to drive the creature into shallow seas. But greed took hold of Kae’s heart. Upon reaching the shore, he forced Tutunui too close to land, where the dolphin became trapped, and then slaughtered and ate him. Across the waves, Tinirau felt the sorrow of his lost companion and vowed justice. He sent forth women of wit and beauty to capture Kae through laughter and song, and they returned with him bound in silence. Tinirau restored balance through sacred judgment, and the seas grew calm once more. To this day, the Māori say that when the waves sing softly against the shore, it is Tutunui’s spirit, eternal and pure, reminding humankind to honor all that lives.
