The Story of Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine: The Founding Ancestors

Rongomaiwahine, curious, set him tests to measure his character — a meal sent to provoke pride, a great fishing expedition to test skill, and a feast of endurance to test restraint. In each trial, Kahungunu met her with patience, skill, and quiet dignity. At last, seeing his heart was true, she welcomed him as her husband. Their union bound two noble lineages, giving rise to the great Ngāti Kahungunu tribe.
