The River Maiden

November 6, 2025

In the lush heart of Yorubaland, where the Oṣun River shimmered like a silver ribbon beneath the moon, the people of Olódò lived by its blessings and feared its mysteries. They spoke of Adetoun, the River Maiden, whose beauty rivaled the stars and whose song could draw even the wisest heart into the depths. One night, a young fisherman named Adewale lingered too long upon the water and beheld her rising from the river’s mirror. She offered him a golden fish and fortune beyond measure, but in return, he promised to visit her whenever the moon was full. Each month he went, and each time, her gifts grew richer and her pull stronger. When at last she asked him to join her beneath the waters forever, his sister Ifeoma followed in secret and bravely intervened. Moved by her devotion, Adetoun released him but warned that every gift must one day be repaid. Years later, when the river swelled and roared, Ifeoma walked into its depths and vanished, as if answering a call from long ago. The villagers still say that when the moonlight dances on the Oṣun, Adetoun’s song drifts softly through the reeds.
